I remember a time, decades ago -- under Reagan, or it might have been under the first Bush -- when the federal government tried to punish and break up Microsoft for its monopolistic practices. After more than a year of legal wrangling, the government failed. Microsoft won. Bill Gates defeated them. I remember thinking at the time, "This doesn't bode well for the future, when a corporation can defeat the federal government of the United States of America." And ... here we are.
Recall it was because Bill started making political contributions.
