One should consider the Old Covenant, in which God actually made a 'contract' with the Israelities. Many recognize this through the Decalogue (Ten Commandments), in which were written in stone. If there was ever any symbolism of 'something' that was meant to last a long time, it is 'something' written in stone. There's far too many examples of artifacts, steles, dolmens, etc. from antiquity to know that in the ancient world, structures made from stone were recognized as lasting a very long time. Notwithstanding, the decalogue was the central thesis of the 'contract' God made with Moses and his people. Of all the laws, regulations, rules, etc. of the Old Covenant, isn't it ironic that it was the Ten Commandments that were inscribed in stone? This fact alone tells us more about the intention of the Ten Commandments, than today's ministers are addressing. Alongside of this there were other 'requirements' of this 'contract' that were to be obeyed as well. I won't get into the details, but I will talk about the composition of a 'contract'. Therein, a contract is composed mainly of the main thesis (Agreement), the Terms, and Conditions.

When Moses returned from the mountain, every aspect of a contract (compact) was agreed to. So, an Offer, Acceptance, Consideration between the Parties was made. The Subject matter and Mutual agreement among the parties was established, and a Mutual understanding of the obligations was also established. The Terms of this 'contract' were the obligations. The Conditions were if the 'contract' was followed faithfully by the Israelites, there would be blessings' from God. If the 'contract' was however violated, and the people were unfaithful to the contract, there would be curses from God. With all the obligations in the Old Covenant (Covenant essentially means contract or compact), we know the Israelites failed miserably in keeping it. This abysmal failure sets the stage for Jesus later on.

The reason I talked about the above subject matter is because when Jesus came along, he did not toss out the Old Covenant. The contract is still very much in tact and in full force. Jesus was only authorized to change the Terms and Conditions of the contract. It was that part that Jesus represented as being the 'blessing' God promised when upholding every aspect of the 'obligations' (Conditions) of the contract. Jesus by lineage represented the very blood and flesh of the Israelites in this regard. This is the reason why Jesus referred to Himself as the 'Son of Man'. One of the Terms of the contract were that the Israelites were to make sacrifices to God as part of repentance for unfaithfully violating the contract. Because Jesus was without fault and represented the embodiment of the Israelite people, His crucifixion was the ultimate sacrifice for all the transgressions of all those who violated the contract.

Not many people think of it this way. In fact, Jesus acts as our lawyer before God. This is why I believe one should not prey to God the Father, but to Jesus who represents us. It is only through Jesus do we reach the Father. The Old Covenant is still as valid and important as it was over 2100 years ago. Only the Terms and Conditions were changed and became known as the New Covenant (New Testament). The New Testament acts as a testimony of Jesus and an 'amendment' to the Old Covenant.
