I own a small trucking company (6 trucks and 6 refrigerated trailers).I’ve been looking to replace 2 2016 Freightliner’s, only problem, there are NO new trucks or trailers to be had. NONE. I have called no less than 12 dealers from coast to coast and it is the same story everywhere. Nothing on the Lots, productions slots owned by larger carriers are filled until mid 2022. It is so bad, my trailer salesman (Wabash trailer in PA) is leaving after 22 years because there won't be anything available to sell until Q2 or Q3 of 2022. He literally stopped showing up to work because there was nothing to sell or do. To make matters worse, these trucks can shit the bed completely over a $50 emissions sensor, guess what...they are all on back order. I saw a video this morning, farmer’s are having the same problem. John Deere has stopped all shipments to dealers.

Chip shortages have cut most new vehicle production already.

Either we get more chips, or start building vehicles without chips. I support the later myself.

They don't want to build new chip plants here because they see the supply disruption as temporary.

I say we need to onshore our manufacturing base, and we should use tariffs to do it.

This whole crisis clearly demonstrates the need. Make it here so we are not caught short again.

The dealership I left has 20 cars on lot down from 1300 on pre covid average. No end in sight. Probably close to a hundred sales people and if they aren't selling the bodyshop accessories mechanics and everything will implode. Plus General motors is owned by China so what is going to happen? I have had one real job interview in 14 months- automotive is dead. Most people making real money working on cars today work at a dealership. I'm out a 140k/yrs job and my unemployment is being cut because restaurants cant find help- wtf does that have to do with me? It has only begun- so much so most don't even know about this situation. Essentially I'm forced to retire.

Have you considered an industry pivot? If you remove industry specific terms from your resume and focus on core skills you could probably find a new niche in the market. Also consider that a lot of jobs are accepting work from home, which expands the market for you.

I'm 56 single father with 3 boys. Everything I see is entry level willing to train. I don't have that kind of time. I can make $60/hr easy if I could just find an opening but there aren't any.

Thanks. I'm 56- single father of 3 boys. Every job opportunity I see is entry level willing to train and I'm too old to start at the bottom of a new career. If I could find a modern bodyshop hiring I can make 120k in my sleep and 145k replacing with a similar job to what I've had since 2005 without starting over. I just need the economy to for reals pick up but I only have about 1 more year to wait on that. It isn't looking good at all.

I use 93 with Lucas upper cylinder lubricant. I may as well run leaded high octane gas. Still I just put in the engine, that's a $7,000 hit if it blows.

The knock sensor just retards the timing in the event of bad gas. Listen for a ping, run good gas, or if you are paranoid about not having a sensor retard the timing a few degrees.

Most cars nowadays don't even have knock sensors.

While i can hope for things to turn around at the higher levels (not holding my breath) you are giving US a heads up for what will certainly affect us locally and directly.

**update* So my driver in out newest 2020 Western Star 5700 EX (5 months old) Is showing a bad DPF sensor code. The truck will start to derate by 15% until it shits the truck down completely. I called the Dealership and they have no ETA on any DPF sensors. To the fucking idiot that was wondering how this was a Qstorm post, the “Storm” is upon you numbnutz. The overwhelming majority of our maintenance issues result from faulty sensors or sensor readings. $180,000 is a giant paperweight without sensors
