If you ever get into a war you will learn what a line is. A Line is a position arrived at after evaluation of where you are at in reference to where you wish to be. It means you do not retrograde in physical distance or intellectual or emotional positioning. For example if you have a spouse and you hear nasty things about that person "holding the line" would mean you do not change your opinion of that person based on the bad news but maintain faith in that person you had up to the bad news. Future may prove you wrong but you do not lose faith at the setback. The plan is real and will work, but it does not seem to be what we thought it would be time line wise. The plan will succeed but will we be alive to witness it?
