It was kind of genius. He started out light. Naturally they were all happy to laugh along initially. He incrementally got nastier and less subtle but it was too late, they had already committed to laughing, and at no single joke seemed much worse than the previous, so there was really no point at which they would naturally stop and say “He’s gone too far” and yet by the end you can see they are visibly uncomfortable and dont know what to do, but just keep laughing.
I will love Ricky Gervais forever for that. He is a hero. He basically told them they are scum to their faces, and they just clapped.
