Just a suggestion for you people to consider.

I've been buying cans of soup for five years now. Basically about $1 a can.

I buy 100 pound bags of rice and beans.

To suppliment the soup.

Gravity water filter.

A TV dish . (Dish network, Direct TV etc )

I use window tint ( MIrror ) to line it.

Cast Iron Dutch Oven.

So here is the dope :

1 can of soup and 1 pound of rice feeds a family of four for one day. HOW ?

gravity feed the rain water into the dutch oven

half gallon in the oven hanging on the 'arm' of the dish above the mirrored portion collecting and focusing the sun on it.

Boils in a few minutes.

add rice or beans

remove and add soup.

Done.

3 months of food (soup)in a single container and 100lb pound bag of rice or beans.

Cheep and delicious.

I farm now, but I don't grow rice ;-)

Good tip.

Here's another. Learn about wild edibles native to your location. Learn the shit outta them. I live in Michigan and I can walk into the woods and come home with dinner for everyone. Winter or summer. Might not be the best meal you've ever had, but you won't starve...

How do you do fellow michigander

beans and rice, in other words, legumes and grains combined make a complete protein.

nothin' like real meat, but it's something.

that's why in many cultures even before the science came to light, they often combine these two types of food.

learn the half dozen plants that grow about everywhere so that you have greens to eat.

people laugh at weeds, but they are a helluva lot more healthy then mass produced farmafia agricultural "products'. clean and more concentrated nutrition. cook em with some cackleberries scramble the mess together and some hot sauce.

good stuff.

red chile pepper will help ward off maladies. good food is good medicine. thats why i like hot sauce, not failing to mention benefits of vinegar.

wild plants: chickweed, plantain, dandelion, young thistle leaves, etc. oh and stinging nettles, one of the best foods made by God. superfood.

dandelion is a diuretic but does not deplete potassium.

i make my standard five mushroom, five herb teas. "whatchagot" mix i call it, whatever is in pantry or the herb chest.

doctor yourself, aint needed a doctor in decades. Praise God.

stuff like that. God's garden.

now for farmers, i do respect the farmer, not the big dogs that try to manage and control what you all grow.

its hard work. The Lord bless you, Farmer. o7

Amen, great comments!

ThanQ, Farmer, a joy to share.

Godspeed!

[–] 0 pt

yep! most "weeds" people take out of the garden are totally good for you!
eat 'em up!...
(don't forget to cook or steam yer nettles first!)

Clover can be used as spice/seasoning. You can make wine out of dandelions, others can be thrown on compost piles of you don't want to use them. Weeds are useful.

Amen to that, especially the stinging nettles, now there is wood or horse nettle but does not pack nutritional wallop of urtica dioica.

That is why also to learn latin names as common names can be confusing.

goes without saying, people, make sure you got a positive ID 100% of the time on 100% of what you harvest.

Be sure of ID. Be sure it is all the same stuff. Once was on a group forage and someone else mixed their plants with mine. Let me just say there were some baddies in the mix. Double check everything. Check it again. Especially for mushrooms. If i am not triple dog sure, it goes into the compost.

Most plants and all mushrooms i cook. Very few plants i eat raw. chickweed stellaria media. young dandy leaves. All edibles be aware of any look alikes that are not edible. Could put a hurt on ya. Best to learn first hand out in the field with experienced forager.

have you thought about going back to some of the older methods of preserving food, people dont really do pickling or fermenting them selves anymore but it improves your diet, improves your average meal, and improves your health too if you do lacto fermenting

if you have the space you could even cure your own meat and if shit hits the fan and you are stuck eating rice, beans, and soup you will be glad you did lol

and if you dont make your own wine or cider that might one to look in too

Absolutely, I can food, brew beer and grow weed. Kimchi and on and on. Living on your own is the way! Turn back the clock, learn from the past. Your right on TARGET !

plus , the big food companies are trying to kill us. I'll give you a prime example. One of the first things China does with waste is ask themselves, "can we repurpose this for sale in the USA ?" and they do, it winds up in our food and the designer drugs in 7/11.

Thanks for taking the time

A TV dish . (Dish network, Direct TV etc )

I use window tint ( MIrror ) to line it.

What's this all about? I have over the air (free) tv, because my cable bill kept on creeping, up. So fuck them. With that said, I do have a 5 year old dish still on my roof. Can I do anything with it?

[–] 0 pt

Apparently lining it with tint can concentrate the sun rays to boil water or something

don't forget to stock up and store spices. and lots of salt..( salt can also be used for food storage )

You also need Shelter, and Heat, Do not leave those out. Food for pets as well as medications.

What shelf life does a can of soup have?

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

Years. There are dates on the cans now, but the industry admits that the dates are only suggestions. The food is still good for quite a while after the expiration date, depending on the product. You can tell when a can goes bad. It leaks or swells.

[–] 0 pt

How long on average after the expiration date are they good in your opinion

>According to the Can Manufacturer’s Institute, “canning is a high-heat process, so it preserves food and prevents the growth of any bad organisms. Canned food is forever safe, but it’s a quality issue when you have a 'best-by' or 'use-by' date.” You should use your canned foods within a couple of years for the best quality of the product.

From a good article: https://www.foodnetwork.com/healthyeats/healthy-tips/2019/08/how-long-is-canned-food-good-after-expiration-date

Better than nothing, I suppose. I'd probably kill myself if I had to eat canned soup beans every day.

I have ~400 chickens, all preppers should have at least a dozen hens.

You live high.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

Nope, but I grow things for that ! ;-)

[–] 2 pts

I'm going to be trying to start that...hydroponically...

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

I'm a master ;-)

advice : Plan for the day it goes BOOM or Bloom. WTF are you going to do with that ?

That smell.

That was my big "OH SHIT" shocker

You can always try your sysem with a tomato plant.

Indoors you play GOD, so timers are your friend and you need alot of CO2 baby. Carbon Credits be damned. Auto pilot everything and your job is to clean shit and reload while you keep an eye. And unless your state is legal for it keep your shit dead quiet. Girlfriend ? no. Go out after your in the "room" , no. Feel me?

I get a pound a plant, so states that allow you 6 plants, I can do 6 pounds every 45 days. Do the math. Others 90 days. One word: CLONE. Factor that in and your Gold. PM me if you want.
