It was looking like good snowball snow.
The thing is that a snowball melt will be something like a sponge in that it won't drip down the same was as if you were trying to melt an ice cube with a flame.
Try melting an ice cube with a candle like that and will probably see the same soot buildup, but different because there won't be any space for the melt to soak into.
