For the folks putting any real credence in these 'snow that turns black and does not melt' videos... how old are you? Totally serious... I see this exact same story every 5 or 6 years. I could see that the first time you see this this seems weird... the fifth or sixth time you see this over the course of 20 years... FFS, Not this shit again. If you are a 20yo... ok, I'll try to be patient. If you are 40+ you really should have been around this block. I feel like I should set a 5 year timer to remind myself to make a stupid black snow video and win a bunch of fake internet points on social media.

To all of the folks that are seeing this for the first time this is really simple.

  1. ALMOST ALL FIRE COMES FROM BURNING A HYDROCARBON FUEL.

  2. BURNING HYDROCARBONS LEAVES A CARBON RESIDUE NO MATTER HOW "CLEAN" THE FUEL IS.

  3. CARBON RESIDUE IS BLACK.

  4. CARBON RESIDUE IS A GREAT INSULATOR AND SLOWS THE MELTING PROCESS.

I had been watching a lot of videos of people in the lower 48 states burning their snow. The snow would turn black and give off a chemical smell (or so they said) and I wanted to see if the snow here would do the…

It was looking like good snowball snow.

The thing is that a snowball melt will be something like a sponge in that it won't drip down the same was as if you were trying to melt an ice cube with a flame.

Try melting an ice cube with a candle like that and will probably see the same soot buildup, but different because there won't be any space for the melt to soak into.

Obviously this idiot hasn’t figured out why igloos make good shelters. “This snow is fluffy.... that’s weird”... “it makes a snowball.... weird”.... “This tightly packed snowball won’t melt when I smash it into the birthday cake candle my fat girlfriend gave me.... weird”
