I'm going to tell this story again:
Way back in about 1990, I drove with a friend from the college we were attending in LA to El Centro where his family lived, way down on the border of Mexico. So we get there, and we're sitting around relaxing, when my friend looks at me and says "Hey you want to go to the border and shoot illegals as they cross?"
I looked at him surprised (as I was still very "wet-behind-the-ears") and asked him if he'd ever done that. His answer was 'no' he hadn't done that, but his step-father had at least once. Needless to say, at the time I couldn't believe him - until his step father walked in to the living room and my friend asked him about it.
Step father seemed a little alarmed by the question, but gave this for an answer: "It's a big, big very empty desert out there. Lots of things happen out there which nobody ever finds out about. I've seen some things happen out there - things I'm not going to give details about. But ya, illegals get killed all the time out there." He looked at the two of us pointedly for a moment and then left the room.
Well, for fun we did load up my truck with a whole bunch of his step-father's guns and three cases of beer, and we did drive out to the desert for a couple of nights. We did not shoot any people - illegal or otherwise. Honestly, we really didn't see anyone. But we had a good time.
It is a big, big, very empty desert out there - oddly with a lot of places to hide. And since that day I've done a bit of digging and have found out the practice of "shooting illegals as they come across the border" still goes on.
Maybe it's time for another desert trip. I know my old friend would be up for it.
