Only silver nitrate causes the discoloration. It's the same stuff used in black and white film.
Ionic silver is just silver particles floating around unattached. Because they're unattached they have a big electron cloud, looking to attract something else.
This electron cloud causes an electrical storm, especially when there are many silver ions floating around.
The electrical storm will kill anything, virus, bacteria, nanobots.
Yeah you probably make some silver nitrates, but unless you make just a horrible batch of mostly silver nitrate and really down that stuff you won't turn colors.
