Because in the long run it is faster than humans, it scales better than humans, and is less expensive than humans.
Doesn't mean there aren't legitimate questions (ethical and otherwise) and constraints that should be put on it. But for now, the underlying drivers for continuing down this path are pretty straightforward and compelling.
Im looking at it from another angle. Remember the Fake Parts from China that downed a lot of our military aircraft? This chips were also put into our cars. I found this out when my car was hacked into while i was driving it. They even shifted the gears on me.
How easy is it to hack into computers?
How easy is it to know cost chips?
What happens then?
Extremely good point. The answer to that should be part of the constraints that I mentioned.
We farm out WAY too many key components of our industry, grid, security, etc to supply chains that we don't fully control. That's an enormous risk to our national security, and also been one of Trump's call-outs since the 80s.
It's the natural evolution of things. This is where tech is headed, one way or another we will get there. For now,we get more and more automation, but I do think that actual A.I., the one that can think for itself no pre-programmed or scripted nonsense, will be something that will come along during our lifetime.
What will happen after actual A.I. will exist, is anyone's guess. Will it be a utopia,a nightmarish dystopia,an apocalyptic terminator type of future,who knows,but each year we are getting closer to it. It's simply the end game,AI will out-think,outsmart,outmaneuver anyone. We as a species simply hit a dead end from a certain perspective, we can't go any further. Sure,we can augment ourselves,we can make ourselves better, but AI is our so called GOD,and we are desperate to create it, so it can think for us,it can solve all our problems.
But that is still decades in the future, for now the best we can do is automation, while it has it's upsides, I think that giving key decision making in the military to nothing but an automaton is not really a good idea.

As i see this, AI will be used to round up the Brothers and Sisters in the future.
