It's OK to go to work, just claim max exemptions on your w-4. Keep YOUR money all year and then carefully decide how much if any YOU want to give them. I agree with the rest of your plan. Don't buy anything you don't absolutely need, barter as much as possible, keep your money out of the stock market, get to know your neighbors and resist anything and everything they throw at you.
