I believe Trump will destroy them during his trial. The longer its postponed and the more action Biden takes, the more powerful Trump becomes.

The Troops are there to let them know they are not in control and show that they stand with Trump.

Couple of things .... I believe the impeachment trial is a trap where ...

  • as you suggest Trump (or Trump's team) will destroy them ... if permitted to introduce evidence

  • not sure of the trial process if Roberts declines to participate ... altho his DS handlers will most likely make sure he presides....

  • beauty of the impeachment trial is that it is self-imposed .... like a 'reach too far' ... where everything backfires - optics will not be good for Congress or the DS

  • its possible that Trump will take the floor in person which could put him in control of the proceedings by sheer force of personality - who would tell him to shut up and sit down?

  • the trial will be the next big gathering in one place of many of the prime coup participants ....
