A strong background in constitutional law is a premium qualification for a senator in my opinion. Senators should have some kind of legal background, or deep (family, career) connections with federal politics at a minimum.
I'm more of the opinion that the overflow of attorneys in Congress has hurt our Republic. We use maritime law, not civil law, and it seems to me that the public should be able to understand the laws their representatives enact. Not an expert on the topic, but this is interesting:
the principle intent of this “missing” 13th Amendment was to prohibit lawyers from serving in government.
