And since some of the key technology was paid for by the government, the transition could be legally smooth.
Where Millions Go Communicate.. Becomes The People's Real Estate.
There was an interesting legal case back in the time of corporate towns. I think it was a mining town. Maybe railroad. Anyway, the company owned all the land of the town, including the town square. The company prohibited the posting of bills (signs) that they didn’t approve of, based on the logic that it’s their land they can do what they want with it. The people wanted to organize a union or something and the company wouldn’t let them post bills informing people when the meetings were etc. This went to the Supreme Court where they decided that the people still have the right to free speech, even in a privately owned town square. I’ve often thought about how this applies to Facebook and Twitter etc. They’re basically privatized town squares where people communicate and share ideas.
Now I’m not convinced Twitter and Facebook should be nationalized, but I do think our first amendment rights should be extended to “virtual town squares”
Leaving this power in private hands would only enable further abuse. Your reservations about govt control are understandable, but keep in mind "The WORLD is about to change." And if it doesn't evolve competently enough to provide something as simple as impartial Social Media.. we're all toast anyway.
