Learning about shortwave radio is a step by step process. One key point is a topic called modulation. It means adding information to a carrier wave either by amplitude, frequency, or phase.

This video shows how AM and FM radios work and answers an interesting question:

Why does lightning interfere with AM but not FM signals?

If you know the answer, you're probably a ham radio junkie and don't need to watch this video. Otherwise, enjoy!

I'm an Elmer. Started on CB back in the 70s and I watched it! Very cool

Got my general radiotelephone and amateur license (tech, upgraded to a no-code general) about 25 years ago. Haven't used it much lately. Used to be big into CB radios and still have my old Antron 99-4A up in the attic. Good post.

Well you certainly have more time in the General class than I do. The code was our stumbling point back in 70s. Bunch of us wanted to make the move but the Idea of send/ rec 5 words in a minute scared us off. Wish I'd been less foolish

Couldn't watch the video... Right after it started and I heard that voice from the old 1950's public service announcements about nuclear war and I stopped-dropped and rolled under my desk.

Hehe, made me laugh so hard with that visual I'm still coughing from it.

Don't tell ONETEN... She swears I don't have a sense of humor.
