There are rumors of the internet and TV stations going down, and possible "darkness" which may be power outages in random locations. We need to be able to find out the news, and I'm guessing the AM/FM radio stations will still be broadcasting. Possibly even Voice of America.

That sounds like a good idea, if everyone owned one to dodge comm blackouts

Yep another guy told me you can somehow hook it up to your internet connection to broadcast off repeaters to go farther as well. They are very versatile. I have a lot of them in different models for my family. The model I recommended is easy to operate, economical, works well, and durable. Worth the 25 bucks you will pay. You should definitely buy the extra charging adapters to charge via USB and using the cigarette lighter in a vehicle. I have a lot of the solar panels and most of the small travel ones charge usb so they charge them easily. Make sure you are prepared. This will help you out. Being able to pick up radio stations as well as channels that others are transmitting on is amazing. It has hundreds and hundreds. It also has a built in flashlight, battery save mode, scrambler, high capacity ion battery, fm/am radio, long standby time, and is an awesome long range comm device.

Another is the simple CB radio.
