As for comm equipment, I have to get going on that now. Already have a couple short waves, but definitely have to get a proper CB, only have a couple old ones on the shelf right now. I do have some small portable hand radios Baofang bf-f8Hp for family and friends. These have really good range 8 watts, just in case the land lines go down too. Since they switched from analog to digital land lines back in the early 1990s those are no longer reliable or hardened. All phone companies use servers to run land lines that are totally vulnerable to EMPs. We already expect that cell towers will be shut down so mobiles will be useless. You are right about ham radios, expensive to get started on, must have a good tower for the antenna and its not portable for a quick exit. If you have to be on the move for whatever reason, a CB is the only way. You are quite right about a plan to get away. I am fortunate also to be in a rural area, unfortunately the city is only 15 miles away. That is really bad, when grocery shelves are empty city slickers will become the enemy as they forage for food and water, they will do anything to get it. It is an extreme scenario but it certainly is a possibility. Best wishes.
Just got up. Lot to unpack in your great reply. I’ve got the morning stuff to do (chickens). Just sent you a PM. I’d like to carry on this conversation.
