The food industry is about to take a giant leap forward towards sustainability as a new partnership between Chicago-based food processing company Archer Daniels Midland and InnovaFeed, a French firm that makes insect protein for animal feed, are set to build the world's largest insect protein factory farm in central Illinois, according to Forbes.

(Anybody have a dig on InnovFeed?)

ADM and InnovaFeed will grow and harvest billion and billions of insects called black soldier fly, whose larvae are scavengers and thrive on decomposing organic matter and convert it into a nutrient-rich protein that can be transformed into animal feed.

Black soldier fly larvae produce at least one hundred times more protein per acre than traditional animal feed sources such as corn, soybeans, sorghum, oats, and barley. This could be a monumental achievement for the agriculture industry as a bid for sustainably sourced food when pandemic-related shortages have developed, along with soaring prices.

"At a time when the World Bank notes that the Covid-19 pandemic will increase extreme poverty by around 150 million, we all need to be very vigilant of another food price bubble," Edwards warned. The good news but not likely to offset a spike in food prices that is already underway is the future mass adoption of insects into the global food supply chain. Pound for pound, insects are the most efficient food source for animals and humans.

How convenient.

So where is all this "organic matter" going to come from? What kind of "organic matter"?

If there is a such a food shortage that people have to eat insects, are they going to feed the larvae fruits and vegetables? Or will another kind of "organic matter" be used which will then be fed back to humans.

If you haven't already started a garden...

1 step from soylent green. Feed dead people to flys and then process larvae into burgers...

If you goddamn goy won't eat the bugs, then we'll just feed it to your food

I hang a plastic bucket with .250 holes in the bottom and fill with scraps, my chickens love the worms the fall out. really!

What a great idea...thx.

takes a bit to get the fly population self sustaining ,but .....stay away from hot dogs or pork, flies don't like it.

Would 7.62mm holes be too big?

[–] 1 pt

No, but just a little expenive. I have mastered a manual insertion technique for that purpose/s

Can you say "prion disease"?

"Fly larvae and mites were exposed to brain-infected material and were readily able to transmit scrapie to hamsters. New lines of evidence have confirmed that adult flies are also able to express prion proteins. Because ocular and cerebral myiases and mite infestation are not rare worldwide, and most cases are caused by fly larvae or hay mites that usually affect sheep and cattle, it is important to discuss the possibility that these ectoparasites could eventually act as reservoirs and/or vectors for prion diseases."

Hehehe, birds have been scratching for bugs since the beginning of time, NIH has been manipulating data since inception. ymmv but honestly ,myself, I have also created wood piles that have crickets as well, I don't ever allow pesticides , so to me ,my girls love scratching for bugs and give me awesome eggs !

Agreed. No pesticides here either.

I think I'll be going to tractor supply today. They always have these cute, fuzzy little creatures.

They are going to feed them the 38 million dead bodies from the chyna bug. We gotta make room for the next 38 million. Grind the bones for ???? No idea maybe filler for making concrete building material?

Would this not be a dream for the climate change crowd? Save burning fossil fuel and trees. Bugs eat "organic matter" that is "collected" and whoa! we got food for the starving underclass and fertilizer to grow soybeans for the people's damned tofu. Strategy was likely concocted over a steak dinner and the best wines paid for by US. Which [they] were chauffeured to in that gas guzzling limo. Yeah. Equity.

For the organic matter [they] will use a conservative approach....

see what i did there?
