What do people even buy on Amazon, I've never been on it, do they sell food or something? Or anything important to daily life?
They sell nearly anything you can think of. The core feature though is the review system, so that you can determine what products are supposedly better than others. Though that's not reliable because it's totally compromised, Chinese products have ridiculously high ratings very often. The other core feature is that the government subsidises shipping on Amazon for some goddamn reason. So instead of leaving your house you can just have it delivered to your door for about the same price.
So basically pretend it doesn't exist, don't be lazy, actually leave your house, and you'll never miss it.
Did the small businesses who are nearly going bankrupt using amazon to sell their products or is the entire small business market being replaced by Chinese goods?
I think it depends what part of the world you are in.
Probably anyone who's spent some time on Amazon have ended up with Chinese products, not always on purpose, sometimes they're even shipped from China. Then if you leave a negative review of their shit product, you start getting emails promising you free stuff do delete your review. Or you get emails offering you free stuff for positive reviews, and so on. It must be at least somewhat effective.
