A few quick fun facts about our electric grids:

The US, Candada, and portions of South America and of Japan run at 60Hz. This is more efficient than 50Hz and we can thank Nikola Tesla for out-arguing Westinghouse over this.

The US and Canada have several grids: the Eastern Interconnection, Western Interconnection, Texas Interconnection, and Quebec Interconnection. There have been many discussions about joining them, but there are many good reasons for not doing so.

A large portion of both countries is de-regulated and the markets runs under an Regional Transmission Organization / Independent System Operator (RTO/ISO) system where there are various mechanisms in place to keep the grid at 60Hz. Primary examples of these mechanisms are things like the Frequency Regulation market where power generation facilities make their power available purely for the purposes of keeping the grid at the right Hz, and Demand Response programs which shut down industrial consumption automatically based on agreed parameters (industries are paid to participate in these programs).

These mechanisms keep the US grids typically within a half a percent variance of that 60Hz (59.7Hz to 60.3Hz). This typically hits the lower part of the range during peak high-demand times, and at the higher end during off-peak times.

Grids that aren't managed quite as well, like Europe, have larger swings (Eastern European countries typically allowed 47Hz to 53Hz)
