I think Lin may be playing dumb and drawing people out. He said:

He told us to read that article/letter very carefully. Are we to believe he didn't see the author's name right there at the top, when he used it to lead into MAJOR allegations, publicly, against very powerful people?

And he's a defamation lawyer? He would definitely know better, right?
