The Hart-Celler Act of 1965, signed in by LBJ, is based on uniting immigrant families and attracting skilled labor.
Before that time, mainly Europeans were brought in. This country was settled by Europeans who share many common values, AND they assimilate. Parents highly stress their children to learn and use the English language.
Today, this isn't the case. For example, people sneak in illegally, stay, and collect freebies off of USC taxpayers. Many of these illegals are also sheltered in Sanctuary cities, so there is much less assimilation to living here. (TV stations also broadcast in languages other than English to 'accommodate' people who don't want to assimilate. Crime and death rates against USCs have soared because of all of these problems.
Finally, not all USCs have jobs, many of which are taken by non-USCs and illegals. Until every USC who needs one has a job, immigration needs to be curbed.
