Using Calcium Carbide and water to produce Acetylene gas is a very neat part of history that is still used today. Unfortunately modern society and education has fallen so far few know about what used to light our way.

Carbide Lamp/Candles is a good search term for this.

My mother used to display an acetylene miner's lamp that my great grandfather used in the mines.

I learned about them from my great grandfather, he had a carbide torch he showed me when he was soldering something when I was a tiny little lad.
