it's a templating language that somehow started being used for web shit. If you need a 95% static page with some variables inserted, it's great. Anything beyond that should be done with something more reasonable. If web 2.0 was a problem that needed the equivalent of a CNC machine, PHP would be the equivalent of a hammer.

Yeah, PHP was a great improvement over things like CGI scripts etc... To this day I think it is a great option for light weight stuff, things people do on their personal GoDaddy website and shit. It is not a sophisticated tool... but if all you are doing is driving a nail a hammer is just what you want.
