One major factor is that say before 1990 (although many other years could serve here), SW was a more specialized field. Now, there is so much demand for SW that a great many are writing. Within the large herd are many fools. Also, the industrialization of SW production impedes and takes the focus away from really basic SW and CS research.

Exactly. Software "engineers" have become a sort of herd animal, and the systems we now use are corrals.
