There's still no excuse for Perl with its confusing and ambiguous syntax. For example, adding a space between a function name and the opening bracket of the argument list shouldn't make a difference. Larry Wall said that programming in Perl was like programming in a natural language where you just wrote naturally and the interpreter would figure it out, but in fact beginners with the language waste so much time trying to make sense of what the rules are.

I've tried to work a little with perl, but it doesn't make much sense to me, I guess it's probably those little bits like you mentioned that trip me up.
