Has it ever been about making money -- or simply a spy operation?

Could be both. I'm sure Amazon hoped they could use these things to increase sales. And since Amazon is a WEF member, no doubt the devices doubled as a spy device. Not to leave out the Google device.

Don't forget that this was intentional. They sell the hardware at MASSIVE losses to get you into their eco-system. It is no surprise that the "alexa" division lost money. That will just allow them to shuffle money around and record losses/gains in ways that allow them to pay as little in taxes as possible.

Why would anyone buy one these fucking things?

People don't think, they like the idea of controlling something. The irony, of course is these 'smart speakers' are used as control.

I know somebody that has that cunt living with him.

I told him to keep testing her on things she won't talk about. ADL origin, Mohammed's child bride, ect.

I do not consent to being ease dropped upon.

Eavesdropped

"lurk near a place to hear what is said inside," c. 1600, probably a back-formation from eavesdropper. The original notion is listening from under the eaves of a house. Related: Eavesdropping.

Amazon thought you were going to tell Alexa to just buy things, and the increased revenue from goods would cover the costs of Alexa itself.

How much you want to bet they'll just slowly let the system decay until they need the cloud processing space for other things, or until the codebase just becomes impossible to maintain?

Government won't let it fail like it won't let Twitter fail.

The most reasonable, and probably most accurate answer.
