Those baofeng battery packs are so cheap I bought ten. You make a good point. I suggest everyone gets a baofeng, the upgrades AND not just a good base but another good handheld. And get other radios like a solid shortwave receiver, GMRS, FMRS, CB. When SHTF it will all be useful.
A CB and a widebad receiver with a good AM section will be useful. SW? Not so much anymore, there's very little being broadcast.
I keep a GE Superradio II as my "End of the world" device. It's got great AM reception.
Nobody broadcasts SW here now. Its still used overseas and useful for warlording. Even if you dont need a radio to talk, its good to be able to listen just in-case. Shit changes fast.
