You really think that Trump firing the "top guy" who'd served that long in government, in an election year, during a pandemic that exists only in the media, would have played well in the media? When he fired Comey he had a memo from the Deputy AG and still caught endless heat in the press. Trump could have blown the lid off of this whole thing day one in office. And yet, not a significant number of people would have believed him and enough people would have supported his removal that it would have happened.
