It's not like a release of this information will be of any official consequence. The whole point is so that the media has access to information they can spin. By the time people understand it is actually bullshit, the 24 hour news cycle has moved on and the lingering effect of the initial accusations takes precedence over the less sensational but logical explanation. Same reason why they want every presidential candidate to "release their tax statements."
