I agree with Lauryl Hebenstreit. Seeing how the constitutionality of the draft is questionable and how we've not used the draft since the end of the Vietnam War, we should go ahead and abolish the Selective Service System.
They leave it in place because ya never know.
I knew this was gonna come up when that Fed court ruled women should be eligible. LOL
I know. But when it's not been used in over 40 years, there's more than likely gonna be plenty of people who want to pursue being a soldier, and technology has significantly improved, there's certainly no real need for it anymore. I mean to be honest, an army of professional soldiers who know what they're doing and are passionate about it will always beat an army of involuntary soldiers who are not passionate and don't know shit about what they're doing.
Right now they can't meet their goals for a professional military without the draft. It's been a continual problem. Yes, I agree that the better soldier is the one who wants to be there ... and I also agree that technology has decreased the demand for many things once related to military service ... however those being said, it still hurts no one to have a fall back plan should one ever be needed again. Just my opinion though ... I wouldn't lose sleep over it either way.
In many ways though I think they should draft some folks again. Give kids a bit a discipline in their lives.
