Electric cars, as currently conceived, are a subsidy scam. Without government subsides, only a small number of enthusiasts would be willing to fork out for them. Think Tesla Roadster not Tesla Model 3. While I don't doubt the ability of the government to force people to use them, the market case just isn't there. Nothing has changed technically since the invention of the lithium ion battery. Those are a bit cheaper now, on account of China, but they're still not practical for most people to be their only car, and most people can't afford to have two cars.
I used to have two cars. I liked it. But then I had to move to where I don't have enough space to park them.
