The trick to "democracy" is balance the perception of legitimacy with the likelihood of getting the regime's chosen candidate elected.

They were attacking Trump well before he was elected -- really kicked into gear when he became the Republican front runner. I think they played a long game and felt like they had the setup, without needing to do much vote rigging. Seems plausible they believed their own poll numbers.
Prior to 2016 they soft rigged elections.
Dead voting. Illegal votes. Lost ballots. Fake polls. Media being the propaganda arm of the dnc. Etc.
2020 they brought out the printers and hard rigged.
