You are correctly identifying a potential "give up now, you cannot win" move, but that is only true if you are looking it from a loser position.
A wining position is something along the lines of "i'll take what I find useful, throw away the rest and shake up the box to see what other opportunities we can make happen".
In other words, it isn't Nick that is saying "give up now, you cannot win", you just wrote that. If you wanted to write something from the perspective of a winner it would have read something like "hes right here but that shit about you cannot win give up is crap we should ignore that and instead we should concentrate on x y z".
It takes practice, but it is literally a mental switch you have to turn on in your head. You cannot ever turn off the negative switch, instead, you have to practice turning on the winning switch and have the circuitry start to dominate your neural ecoystem.
