They aren't doing this to gain customers. You have to look into what the other motives might be. I can give you one that is often overlooked, right here. The assholes that run these corps are social people, too, and they run in particular social circles. These are, potentially, very lefty circles. After all, remember shit like socialism is quite popular amongst the self-righteous rich. Therefore, their motivation may have nothing to do with corporate profits but rather fitting in. In Big Tech, for instance, you're looking at CEOs who run around Silicon Valley consorting with, at best, Democrat political operatives and, at worst, Antifa. If they're the owner, they're under very little obligation to seek profits for others, and they likely do not care about lost profits for themselves since they have too much money anyways.
