Great post but one point of disagreement; Unless you plan to rent a gun and then buy one the same week, just get a gun. First rule of a gun-fight is bring a gun. Plenty of entry level AR's that will treat you right. Yes this one is 1.5 lbs heavier than it needs to be, and that one doesn't have a free floated barrel, and this one doesn't come with iron sights- fuck off, buy it. Unless you're super god damned poor, you're never going to say "gosh I wish I didn't buy a gun which holds it's value and can save my life".
Also, when it comes to availability of rounds, anything mil-surp, particularly from east bloc nations is still available right now. I basically stopped plinking 556/ 9 (except for monthly plan drills) b/c it's so fucking absurd. But I can still plink 762 x 39 or 54r easy and without worry. Yeah steel sucks compared to brass- right now I don't care.
Also, the most important caliber in the world is the .22. Get a 22 (pistol and rifle) and you can always plink, even if you grit your teeth and opine "9 mil used to cost this much" to the dude behind the counter who's heard it 11 times today. That 22 will get you rounds down range right now.

By the time you put the correct attachment points to get it to point down a red dot and good back up irons, you may as well buy a BCM or Daniel Defense. You might save a little money but not much. A troy or midwest industries handguard with QD points and swivels will cost a few hundred. The stock/grips/handguards will be better ergonomics and more of what you actually need. I don't want to be standing next to some asshole that has their rifle pointed at my foot.

It's ok for practice but it's not that important. If someone had been stacking 9mm and 5.56 for years they shouldn't need to worry about it. Good .22s are expensive as well, it's just more shit to buy mags and accessories and probably won't match the ergos of your actual weapon. Buy more 9mm and 5.56, well, you know, 2 years ago. lol

Ah, I see that you've recently gotten into firearms. Don't worry, it takes a long time to learn, and there are a lot of nuances. Don't feel overwhelmed! I'm sure you'll feel more comfortable with the subject matter in a couple of months. Keep at it sport!
No, I got into firearms during the Obama years.
Unfortunately, most of it ended up being crap or required extensive mods to get it up to date. People getting into guns today are better off because everything comes with pic/quad/mlok rails and QD mounts now, even lever actions and shotguns can come with pic rails. You've got QLS/ALS holsters, awesome belts and carriers and shit, it's just hard to get and expensive.
I have a 10/22 and a 22/45. It's handy for fundamentals but it's not an AR and and glock. Having those guns doesn't get me much additional capability and .22 is expensive now. You end up buying a cool Magpull 10/22 stock, pik rail and red dot, some 25 round mags and your 250 dollar walmart gun is now a 6-700 dollar gun and still isn't an AR-15.
Now they have those CMMG .22 drop in bolt conversion kits or a complete upper. That's what you'd want, then you can shoot .22 out of your AR.
