Don't talk about your preps, capabilities, etc. I've said this before in other places and got a lot of guff about it.
You can "choose better" but people change, usually for the worse. The person you chose 5 years ago may not be the person you're dealing with today. Today's friend is tomorrow's enemy, I've had it go the other way too.
If someone does know, there are more or less subtle ways to let them know that move will be the last move that they ever make. If I know someone's coming to get me, I'm coming to get them first. I'll win that way every single time and they know it.
People don't fuck with a serious man, the trick is to actually become the kind of person that no one fucks with. Maximize everything by doing the right things that build character and morale every day. Strive to do the right thing in every situation as much as you can and be a good person. By good, I mean disciplined and stoic, not lazy or constantly pleasure/comfort seeking.
You can't be an impotent, self centered faggot and get respect. If you're gonna roll with guns, you'd want to be able to back it up in all aspects. That means daily practice in at least one aspect. You should be able to teach others.
Practice in your plate carrier and belt every day, at least put it on and dry fire a few times and get to the range once a week. If you don't have these things, you should. I recommend something low profile/minimalist that can conceal under a jacket but still carry a decent amount of shit. Get to that gym and do some legit strength training, make sure you get in some rope skips and planks afterward. Learn at least one real (not pantomime) martial art such as boxing or jiu-jitsu. All aspects.
