The persistence of the 6 million figure is unreal. That number has been yielded to error many times over the years. What, didn't it get reduced to 1.5 million by some authority at some point? I'm forgetting the details, but it was pretty much universally acknowledged - based on common sense - that 6 million bodies could not have disappeared in Germany due to a combination of burial and burning. So they reduced it to 1.5. I think some other actually authoritative records indicated it was closer to maybe 200k Jews died in total during the war, which doesn't make their figure an outlier suggesting a genocide at all. Still, the number itself has become a religious symbol. The six million. Always. Haha. It would have been nearly half of their global population, and yet, after the war, do we see a great deal of conversation about the decimated Jewish population of only 6-7 million remaining? No. If I remember correctly, the census taken after the war showed something like 15 million globally, so somehow half of them died, but their numbers were unaffected.
