I once asked a LEO "what gives you the right to search my vehicle and make a mess of it? Are you going to clean up after yourself and put everything back nice?"

Of course he said "I have the authority, and no, I will not"

I then asked "who GIVES you authority to hurt me and waste my time? I certainly don't want to hurt you"

He was speachless and told me to be on my way.

Ever since that encounter I have been wondering if no man has authority to begin with, how can man give it to someone else?

In this case you did.

You gave them authority to police your behavior when you got your license. It’s all there in the fine print.

Your question also applies to the “authority” of stop lights.

That's duress. Sign this or you can't do anything and I give you almost nothing in return.

Not an enforceable contract under common law, no consideration offered or realistic alternative.

The real source of the authority is the gun pointed at your head, but in America we all have them.

So the final source is that most American men are cowards, afraid to die for that freedom they always talk about.
