Surely there's a lot more to it when you want those gigantic ships to fit, aren't these canals built with long-term loans anway? I imagine it's not that profitable.

There was something about the lease of the canal but I don't remember the details and I would have to search. Interestingly, we still do not know whether the Treaty of Versailles was signed for an indefinite period or for 100 years. Maybe all the hysteria with the virus isn't a medical problem at all.
