A .300 blk has nearly the same ballistics as 7.62x39, you're probably thinking of subsonic loads. My ex navy seal instructor uses an .300 blk 11.5 with a suppressor.
Like I said, plenty of pros use a shorter barrel 5.56 down to 11.5, the limitation is after 100 yards or so.
The AK is more concealable do to the availability of a folding stock.
