So let's think about it in practical terms. Say they are lying to you, which is obvious, as the government has lied to it's citizens since time immemorial. What now? Well that means the government is illegitimate doesn't it? Will it stop people from believing in the government which still has thugs that can kick in your door and your face any time they want? How about money? It has no intrinsic value, and the fed can counterfeit it with no repercussion, any ol' joe however, will have their door and their face kicked in by the state if they try. How do you undo all these lies without destroying civilization?
