So their math was wrong multiple times prior to it being "correct" now.

I will "believe" it because the math works out, the gravitational field calculations work out, and the expected effects on the Earth, Moon, asteroids, comets, and man-made satellites and spacecraft work out. The way science works is that you have to first come up with a model that is a better predictor of the model you wish to replace. Absent that, nothing gets replaced. Show me a better model with the math, physics, and chemistry to go along with it and I'm all there.
