I partied a lot in my youth (clean now for six years) so I've seen a lot of things someone who hasn't would consider "serious."
When you're living it, it's really not as crazy as it seems from the outside.
There are so many people on drugs walking past you every day without you realizing they're on something, and some of the smartest people you'll ever meet got that way because mind-altering substances allowed them to see things in a different light, and expanded their perception of reality.
Almost everything you can get on the street you can also get from a doctor for the flimsiest of reasons.
That's not to say junkies and dope fiends aren't an untrustworthy and problematic burden to anyone who deals with them, just saying if the individual is a responsible adult who doesn't lose themselves to substance abuse, that it's really not that crazy to find out someone you've known for years occasionally uses meth and heroin the same way you'd use coffee and beer.
The difference in recreational user vs full-time abuser is akin to having a few drinks vs being an alcoholic.
When every other college student is taking Adderall for "ADHD" (literally meth pills) and everyone with "back pain" can get bottles of Oxycodone (heroin), I no longer judge anyone negatively for acquiring the same shit on their own initiative without a doctor.
I see what you mean I guess. Some smart folks have a high level of openness to experience and therefore dabble in drugs. It's just that I have met and have known my fair share of folks who destroyed themselves and families due to drugs. I avoid them like the plague.
You're making the right call by avoiding them, honestly; they're an experience best had when one is young, resilient, highly social, and able to quickly bounce back from any negative side effects. If your shit is already together and you're not constantly in search of novelty or pushing boundaries, there's not much reason to get involved with recreational drug usage.
That said, psychedelics like mushrooms or LSD are an entirely different thing, and would be something to try at least once in your life, regardless of age.
They're small-dosage, highly profound, six-to-twelve hour experiences that are best described as taking a cosmic shower and cleansing the soul, if done in a positive setting. They're not like taking pills or getting drunk, you don't do them casually or daily for a physical feeling, they're practically a religious experience used for personal enlightenment. Definitely something I think would be a shame for anyone intelligent to not experience before they die, even if you don't get around to it until after you're retired and in your 60s on a beach somewhere.
Something cool to read about when you're bored, if nothing else.
There's a famous artist, Alex Gray, who makes artwork that gives an idea of what it's like to do psychedelics:

LSD I have heard is interesting. I used to do float therapy which is really good for you and can give mind altering experiences without drugs.
