They don’t care. How much actual support did the more brutal monarchs of Europe ever really enjoy? Very little, but they had the money and the weapons so what they said went. Then every now and then you’d get a popular leader of the people who would resist and challenge the monarchy, like Oliver Cromwell or Robespierre and eventually Napoleon. Problem was, once the Cromwells and Napoleons got their hands on the money and the weapons they rapidly morphed into carbon copies of the brutal monarchs they had convinced the hoi poloi they resisted on grounds of principle. People are dicks. People with power can be dicks legitimately. Dicks therefore pursue power so that they can be legitimate dicks, and your approval or your view they are ruling over you in “an honest way” will only ever be, at the very most, a means to an end.
