Just to keep facts straight, he's already been impeached. That happens in the House, and it literally just means "to accuse." Think of it like a grand jury indictment. They're simply making a formal accusation and claiming there's enough evidence to got to trial.

The Senate trial is what decides guilt or innocence. And even then, a conviction doesn't guarantee removal from office, as that's a separate matter. Since he's already out of office that doesn't come into play.

As to jail time, that will never happen. They want to convict him not so they can put him in jail, but because a conviction makes him ineligible to ever run for office again. They're terrified that after 4 years of Joe & The Ho, Trump will run again in 2024 and win.
