There's a certain tenacity that I picked up while playing chess years ago. When the game started, I focused on getting a win. If I was down on pieces, I would focus on getting a draw. If I was most likely going to lose, I would draw the game out as long as possible making it as difficult for my opponent as possible to get his win. If they're going to win, make it as expensive to win as possible. Make sure they're exposed and depleted as possible so the next generation or culture can take them out. Focus on their pain. Make them feel the pain. Make them afraid. Haunt them with the possibility of a real loss.
