Just got back from picking up my truck from the garage and I have another mask story. Two people working inside the office, fat bitch and a dude, masked of course. I knew it's only a matter of time before she says something. When I came in the other day to check availability, I didn't wear my mask. Spoke w/her and told her I'm sending a tow. She didn't say anything.

So I'm in there again picking up my truck, no mask. She's looking at me but not saying anything, I know she's dying to open her pie hole. I pluck out $500 cash and put it on his desk.

"Do you have a mask?" she asks. No I told her. "Let me get you one" and hands me a nice shiny black mask with the automotive logo on the side. Gee thanks I say and I proceed to fold it up nicely and put it in my pocket. Guy doesn't say shit btw. We continue to talk and she's shooting glances at me from behind her oppression shield and all the time I'm waiting for her to attempt to enforce her misdirected authority. She doesn't. Because she knows she has no fucking authority to say shit to a customer.

The last time I walked in for service without a mask was subway for some food. She point blank told me, "no mask, no service". So what's the difference here? One was a $12 meal and the other was a $500 bill from a repeat customer that's spent $1000's over the years on maintenance. One makes $12/hr at a no skill job and the other makes prob 30-40K a year. One has the exclusive right to not serve customers the other might lose her fucking job if she said the wrong thing to a client. Yes, I am the client.

After handing me the mask, what other move did she have left? She tried to exercise her bitch ways on me (not until I paid fyi) but knew full stop if she got mad, it would be unprofessional and yelling at a client is an absolute no no. So i folded it up and put it in my pocket.

Navigating this covid stuff is like a game. Knowing where you can push and where you can't. It' empowering knowing someone is trying to control you but can't because of fundamental complexities of doing business. If she opened her fat pie hole to scold me or remind me of any "policy", I would take my business elsewhere and she fucking knows it. Capitalism wins every time!

We can beat this if you play your cards right.

Ya at first I was just confrontational. Then I realized it's more effective to roll with it, play the duck, make it awkward for them to say anything. If you're confrontational or a smart ass, it's easy for them to say something. The key I think is to make it difficult and awkward. Remember that they are reeling inside wondering if they should say anything. People's normal default is to be non-confrontational, they don't like to do it. So, make them struggle with their internal cognitive dissonance. Knowing what's going on inside their head is the best part!

If you're confrontational or aggressive in your response, they will use that as an excuse to kick you out of the store regardless of whether you are right about not wearing a mask. Don't give them that option.
