I can testify that I tell pollsters weird shit. They always call and ask weird, misleading questions, and I just say something. This is assuming I take the poll. I don't usually but sometimes I have a minute, and it's interesting to see what they are asking.
One of their favorite tactics seems to be as to ask the same question twice, phrased slightly differently. I can't tell if they are trying to throw out results of people who give conflicting answers or if they are just trying to compare the effects of different wording for science.
When they report these results, they rarely tell you exactly what they asked people. It may be quite different from what the news story reports.
